A staircase is one of the most prominent architectural features in any home — and one of the most impactful upgrades when it's tired or builder-grade. Catalino Quality Construction installs, rebuilds, and refinishes wood stairs and railings throughout Marietta, Roswell, and the greater Atlanta area. From simple tread replacement to full custom stair systems, our work combines structural integrity with the finish quality you'd expect from a fine finish carpenter.
Tread and Riser Replacement
Converting a carpeted stair to a stained hardwood tread with painted risers is one of the highest-value cosmetic upgrades in a home. We remove the existing carpet, pad, and tack strip; level and prepare the existing stringers and rough treads; install solid oak (or other hardwood) treads with proper overhang and bullnose; install primed MDF or poplar risers; and either pre-finish or site-finish the treads with a durable polyurethane.
Newel Posts, Balusters, and Handrails
A full railing rebuild — replacing the newel posts, balusters, and handrail — completes the stair upgrade. We install solid wood or hollow box newels, anchored properly to framing (a wobbly newel is the single most common stair complaint), wood or iron balusters at code-compliant 4-inch spacing, and a continuous handrail at the correct 34-to-38-inch height. See our hand rail installation page for handrail-only work.
New Stair Construction
For additions, basements, decks, and full remodels, we build complete new stair systems from scratch — laying out and cutting stringers to code-compliant rise and run, building open or closed stringers, installing treads and risers, and completing the railing system. Exterior deck stairs use pressure-treated framing with hardware rated for outdoor exposure.
Licensed and Insured
Catalino Quality Construction is licensed through the State of Georgia and fully insured. Robert Catalino personally handles or supervises stair work — it's a project category where the difference between adequate and excellent is entirely in the craftsman's hands.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace just the stair treads without rebuilding the whole stairway?
Often yes — if the stringers (the structural diagonal supports under the stairs) are sound and the rise-and-run dimensions meet code, we can replace just the treads and risers. This 'tread cap' or 'retreading' project converts a carpeted stair to stained hardwood treads with painted risers and is one of the most popular interior upgrades we do.
How long does a full stair rebuild take?
A complete interior staircase rebuild (new stringers, treads, risers, newels, balusters, and handrail) typically takes one to two weeks depending on complexity, finish, and whether the stairs are open or boxed. Tread-only replacement on existing stringers usually takes two to four days plus finish time. We stage the work so the stairs remain usable as long as possible — though there will be a day or two where you need to plan around the project.
What baluster styles are available?
Common options include traditional turned wood balusters, simple square wood balusters, wrought iron balusters (single basket, scroll, twist, plain), and modern stainless cable or glass panels. Iron balusters paired with stained hardwood treads and handrail is a particularly popular update for early-2000s homes with builder-grade oak rails. We bring samples so you can see options on your stairs.
Do new stairs need a permit?
Replacing treads and risers with the same rise and run typically does not require a permit. A full rebuild that changes the stair geometry, adds a stair to a new location, or modifies framing does require a permit. We handle permitting when needed.
