Nothing elevates a home quite like the natural beauty and warmth of hardwood floors. Whether you're choosing solid oak planks for a formal dining room or engineered hardwood for an open-concept living space, our team delivers flawless results that showcase the wood's character and hold up to daily life.

Species, Grades, and Finishes

We work with all major hardwood species — oak (red and white), maple, hickory, walnut, and ash — in plank widths from 2 1/4-inch strip up to 7- and 9-inch wide-plank. Grades range from clear (consistent color and minimal character) through select, common, and rustic (more knots and color variation, often the more in-demand modern look). Finishes include traditional oil-based polyurethane, water-based polyurethane, hardwax oil, and matte or satin sheens. Installation follows National Wood Flooring Association guidelines.

Installation Process

Hardwood installation is detail work. We deliver and acclimate the flooring in your home for the time the manufacturer specifies (typically 3 to 7 days) so the wood reaches equilibrium with your interior humidity. We inspect and prep the subfloor — flatness, moisture content with a meter, fastener tightness — and install a proper underlayment or vapor retarder as needed. Layout is planned to favor the longest sight lines, minimize awkward cuts at doorways, and place seams in low-visibility locations. Nailing follows manufacturer schedules so the floor sits flat without squeaks.

Refinishing and Repair

Hardwood doesn't have to be replaced when it looks tired — it can be brought back. Our refinishing process uses dust-containment sanding equipment that keeps the mess to a minimum, multiple grit passes for a smooth substrate, optional stain change, and two to three coats of durable finish with proper dry time between coats. For damaged boards, we can replace individual planks by weaving in new wood and refinishing the area so the repair is invisible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Solid or engineered hardwood — which should I choose?

Solid hardwood (3/4 inch nail-down) is the long-term choice for conditioned main levels and second floors — it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over decades. Engineered hardwood (a real wood veneer over a stable plywood or HDF core) is the better choice for basements, on concrete slabs, and homes with humidity swings, because the cross-laminated core resists cupping and gapping. Engineered with a thick wear layer (3+ mm) can still be refinished one or two times.

How long do refinished floors last before needing it again?

A properly refinished hardwood floor with a quality polyurethane finish typically holds up well for 8 to 15 years in a normal household, longer in low-traffic spaces. High-traffic paths and kitchens wear faster. Solid 3/4 inch hardwood can be fully sanded and refinished five to seven times over its life — easily a century of service from one floor.

Do I need to leave the house during refinishing?

For oil-based polyurethane, most homeowners stay elsewhere for two to four nights because of fumes. For modern water-based finishes (which we use most often), the smell is mild and dries quickly — most clients can remain in the home if they can avoid the work area. We discuss your situation during the estimate and recommend the finish that fits your timeline and tolerance.

Can you match a new hardwood install to existing floors?

In many cases, yes. The most reliable approach is to weave new boards into the existing field and then sand and refinish the combined area as one floor — this hides species and color differences. Matching new prefinished hardwood to existing prefinished hardwood is harder because of manufacturer color variation; we test samples on site before ordering.
